چکیده

pseudo-client program] In this poster, we present an implementation of a VOD (Video on Demand) system that addresses the problem of increasing video stream supplying capabilities. To get fundamental data of video stream transferring characteristics on Ethernet, we first made an experiment in which it became clear that bottlenecks of CPU of a video server was the most serious. To solve this problem we implemented a distributed RAID4 (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) method video server. “Distributed RAID” means extending the RAID method usually applied to disks to the servers, so as to achieve improvements in performance and reliability.(Fig.l) The great advantage of this architecture is that the linear performance improvement can be achieved by adding inexpensive servers of a difision model. Swift is an early implementation of distributed RAID at California University[l]. As this system was not an video server system, only usual data (not video data) transfer tests were reported, and the performance improvement was not proportional to the number of servers. On the contrary, we used video data and tested the system by checking frame drop rates as well as observing picture quality to check the applicability for video servers. An scalable performance improvement proportional to the number of servers was measured. It was also true in degradation mode in which one of the servers is dropped by failure. Moreover, our experiment is nearer to practical systems in the point that the data transfer rate in the test(41.2Mbps) is much higher than Swift case(around 8Mbps). Finally, we also made a dynamic one server drop test successfully, with no infulence to moving pictures. [Video data] For testing more than 6 clients, we made and used a pseudo-client program, which were loaded on each client and behaved as if there were more than one client. Building video-on-demand servers

Toward the direction of supporting an end-to-end video-on-demand (VOD) system with guaranteed quality over ATM networks, this paper introduces our eeorts to solve this challenging problem from the source: building VOD servers. One of the performance objectives of building VOD servers is to support the maximum number of concurrent video streams with acceptable quality of services (e.g., guarante...

An Effective Failure Recovery Mechanism with Pipeline Computing in Clustered-Based VOD Servers

For the actual Video-On-Demand (VOD) service environment, we implement a cluster-based VOD server composed of general PCs and adopt the parallel processing for MPEG movies. For the implemented VOD server, a video block recovery mechanism is designed on the RAID-3 and the RAID-4 algorithms. However, without considering the architecture of cluster-based VOD server, the application of these basic ...

Design of Fault-Tolerant Large-Scale VOD Servers: With Emphasis on High-Performance and Low-Cost

ÐRecent technological advances in digital signal processing, data compression techniques, and high-speed communication networks have made Video-on-Demand (VOD) servers feasible. A challenging task in such systems is servicing multiple clients simultaneously while satisfying real-time requirements of continuous delivery of objects at specified rates. To accomplish these tasks and realize economi...

Storage Replication and Layout in Video-on-Demand Servers

We propose and analyze an architecture for storage servers in large Video on Demand (VoD) systems. We describe a method for distributing the collection of titles among the levels of the storage hierarchy, based on estimates of the mean demand for each title. The resulting distribution minimizes cost for a given level of performance. Since high availability is desirable in VoD systems, we consid...

Title: Pare: a Partial Replication Strategy Adaptive to Movie Popularity Changes for Video-on-demand Servers Speaker

The performance of a Video-on-Demand (VOD) system is significantly impacted by the throughput of its storage subsystem. Current VOD storage subsystem normally consists of an array of hard disks organized in some RAID organizations. Although it can achieve a large storage capacity, its actual throughput could be lower than its ideal bandwidth. This is mainly because some popular videos receive m...
